Feeding Thoughts

Feeding Thoughts

This piece was the culmination of work from four earlier participatory exhibitions held in Tokyo, Shetland, Aberdeen and Edinburgh between 2003-2005.

Visitors to these exhibitions were asked to record “What is the most important thing you have found in your life so far? ”.  The answers were written on paper and folded in a traditional Japanese way.

The folded paper remained unopened and was made into a coracle like vessel (a traditional vessel for traveling between islands within the British Isles).

The coracle was used symbolically as the vehicle for “connecting” the “insular” locations of the four previous exhibitions.

This coracle was then burnt in a fieldwith the ashes being returned to the earth, as part of nature’s cycle and thus their thoughts were concealed.
