Kibou

Kibou

This was a participatory work.

Visitors were asked to reconstruct a Haori- kimono, (which had been ripped apart), by pinning pieces from the (original) Kimono, together with new material, back on the lining – to form a new design.

The work was symbolic of Japan, pre- and post-  the earthquake and tsunami which occurred a year earlier.

The lining was the foundation of the nation and the outer garment the more superficial material elements of living. The outer layer was destroyed, and was then being rebuilt (but would never be the same), little by little - through community spirit and with the generous help from the rest of the world, on the (indestructible) nation’s cultural & moral foundation.
